So if you want to colour your hair at home, we are here to help.

What Kind Of Colour Do You Need?
Firstly there is the kind of hair colour that you are looking for. Ask yourself if you are looking for something permanent or that can be washed out. You also need to think about what colour you want in your hair, perhaps you are looking for something way out there? Or are you trying to cover those greys? It might seem like a minefield out there but we are here to help you colour your hair at home.
Semi-Permanent Colour
Semi-permanent colour is a colour that will last up to 20 washes. Although most will wash out after 8 or 10 washes, depending on how often you wash your hair. They are great for testing out different colours in your hair before you go permanent. As well as being kinder to your hair than more permanent colour. Sadly a semi-permanent colour will not be strong enough to cover grey hair, you will need something stronger.

Permanent Colour
This is going to last longer than a semi-permanent colour, but it is harsher on your hair. Permanent colour is going to damage your hair slightly and dry it out. So make sure you condition your hair regularly to keep it soft and shiny.
Permanent colour will grow out and fade as time goes on. You can help to keep its colour by using a colour shampoo when you wash your hair.
Temporary Colour
Temporary colour is a wash-in and wash-out colour, you wash it in and it lays on the top of your hair strands, rather than penetrate it. Some come as shampoos that you wash in and then let dry. Others come in a mousse that you put on damp hair. You can even get a coloured hair spray, to spray in your hair and wash it out the next day.
Highlights/ Bleach
Bleach is the strongest of all of the options and the harshest on your hair. Bleach will take all of the colour pigment out of your hair. You need to make sure your hair can be bleached before you do the whole head. If your hair is too dark, it will not bleach down to blonde. It will take several attempts and will most certainly dry your hair out.
Highlighting is a great option if you want to go blonde slowly or just a little bit to brighten your hair up. You will need a friend or family member to help you do this, to ensure you do it equally all over the head.

Some Tips On How To Colour Your Hair
Now you have chosen your hair colour and you are ready to do it, you need to prepare yourself for colouring it. So we wanted to give you some advice on how to colour your hair at home. Being prepared means there are no mistakes and it means you get your hair done quicker without a mess.
- Make sure you do an allergy test before you put colour on your hair. Mix a little bit of colour and then pop some behind your ear and leave it to dry. If it irritates you or causes any pain, do not colour your hair. Also, take a strand of hair and colour it, leave it to process and then wash it off. This will make sure that the colour works on your hair and you get the colour that you want.
- Put Vaseline around your hairline but do not touch the hair. This will stop it from staining your skin as your hair colours. If some does spill on your skin, make sure you wipe it away straight away. The longer you leave hair colour on your skin, the more it will stain. Whilst you rinse your colour out, wipe the vaseline away too.
- Wear the plastic gloves that come in the box. Because they will stop the colour from irritating your hands as well as stopping the colour from staining them too.
- Don’t scrimp on the hair colour. If you have long or thick hair, make sure you buy enough colour to cover it. If you scrimp on the colour, the finished result will be patchy and not look so good.
- You need to completely follow the instructions. If it says to keep your colour on for a certain time, make sure you wash it off at the correct time. If you don’t leave it long enough, it won’t process enough but if you leave it too long, it will over process.
